Camino Post #3 - The Many Paths on the Camino

We put our welcome prayer into good action when we had to stop 1/8 mile in to put on our rain gear. Welcome, welcome, welcome even the rain, which was not how I envisioned our first day.  However, as we walked on and the rain began to lift we felt as though we were in another world. The miles flew by as there was so much to take in.

The path is well marked and well travelled. We wound through neighborhoods with cobblestone roads and grapevines climbing over fences. We walked through tree lined wooded paths that led up and over bubbling brooks. We walked along highways and roads, the bright yellow arrow always leading the way.

About 6 miles in we came to a crossroad. Two paths which both led to the same place.  One was shorter and the other about a mile longer but clearly more beautiful. We chose the “short” route which we quickly regretted. It was lined with industrial factories. The path was narrow and covered in garbage. The smell was awful. We pushed through quickly and talked about how much those two paths can mimic life sometimes. Often, the road that seems harder or in our case longer, is actually the better of the two. Not that the shortcut doesn’t lead to the same destination but you sell yourself short on all the journey could hold.

Overall, day 1 of hiking the Camino has us hooked. Hooked in heart, mind, body, and soul.

Until tomorrow, Buen Camino,

The “shorter” route

Almost to O Porrino

You must collect 2 stamps per day along the route.

We made it!

The food in Spain is great, especially after a long walk.

Our stay tonight has a fantastic view.
